Google Street View doesn’t do the Cape Flats

When Google first launched street view in Cape Town I did 3 things (which I'm sure everyone else did too)

  1. I found my current house
  2. I found my folks place
  3. I found my work, or at least tried too. Google didn't venture down my road.

After that initial exercise it soon became quite boring.

While driving home that day I had a bit of a brain wave : "How awesome would it be to go look at Lavender Hill in street view?".
I mean, lets be honest here : A White Male in Lavender Hill has a life expectancy less than that of a 2nd Lieutenant in Vietnam.

But by the time I got home I had hooted at a couple of taxis, dodged some street hawker pushing his trolley and had at least 2 mini-near accidents and thus had completely forgotten about this great little plan of mine..... until today.

Boy, was I disappointed.
When using Google maps you can drag the little "street view man" around and roads, and those that are viewable in street view will light up informing that they have indeed been scanned by the almighty google street view car.

But you will notice that once you hit Prince George Drive (M5) (passed Wetton Road) you will suddenly started to notice less and less viewable roads on the right (north) of the M5. By the time you hit Grassy park there is almost nothing viewable.
And Lavender Hill? NOTHING!! :(

Google Doesn't like the Cape Flats

My reasoning for the following anomaly is that the Google Street View driver who was assigned that area must have had a thought process along the following lines :

Crap, that is the Gang lands! I've heard it is quite dangerous..
It has gangs!!
*GASP*

Ah! WAIT! *Light Bulb flashes above his head*

Gangs don't have internet, therefore they won't try to find their own houses on street view....Since no one is going to check out these areas I can just skip this part and no one will know!!

Sorted!

Thanks Google for ruining my virtual safari!
