How I won my first ESL tournament!
Yesterday I took part in a small ESL platinum league (9player) tournament which I magically won.. To be honest, the competition field wasn't that hot. I have struggled in these types of tournaments in the past because players seem to think that an "all in" strat is the way you win tournaments. Luckily for me, I got bumped straight in to the Quarter finals which meant all of my matches were best of 3's.
In each of my match ups players attempt at least one "all in" (and all ways won
), but then I'd destroy them in the next game
The finals against Chillabong was actually quite disappointing as his skill level was a bit below my expectations. After a methodical stream rolled first match on blistering sands (and some abuse from Chillabong), he went on to pick Steppes of War and try 6 pool Zerg rush me??? SERIOUSLY? You playing in a finals of tournament (sure it isn't important), but your best come-back is a 6 pool??
Anyways, it was a great night with some tense moments.. But enjoyed it all the same..
I'll definitely be playing in more of these once exams are finished!
You can grab the replay pack if you are nerdy like that
4th place in ESL tourney and some replays
Last night I took part in another ESL SC2 Gold/Platinum division tourney.
I made it all the way to the semi's, but getting there was quite interesting.. Well the first match anyways.
This first replay that I'm about to show you proves that complete and utter n00bs can reach platinum division in SC2 just by going one cheese tactic.. It is all they know, it is all they can do.. And if it fails?? Well then they should rather just quit.
The replay is quite long (51mins), so here is a short synopsis.
Zerg baneling busts my base (Partly because of bad expansion timing on my part) and at one point has me @ 2 Command Center's and a Rax. I obviously do not take this lying down and crawl deep down into that turtle shell of mine. For the next 35mins or so my opponent maxes out @ about 16000 minerals, but only 200 gas, and even with 6 expansion doesn't hit 200 food cap, and never uses his queens energy once!
Anyways, have a watch
The next 2 replays are TvT. The worst part about this whole thing is that I knew what my opponent was going to do and he still beat me.. TWICE! His banshee harass was just so good I had no option but to defend. After losing to this twice I realised 2 vikings and a raven would have worked well.
UltraLord vs Alex_R Game 1
UltraLord vs Alex_R Game 2
(FYI : It was 11pm.. I was tired and just wanted to go sleep)
The final replay is not from the ESL.. But it is a brilliant short TvT match up. I've always wanted to do this but have never quite known how to pull it off.. Now I do
Awesome rep.
